Abstract

Magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-A sound reproducing or transmitting instrument, such as a hornless loud-speaker, comprises a large diameter conical diaphragm connected at different parts to a number of coils arranged in a magneticfield. The coils are preferably arranged concentrically, each being located in a separate magnetic field. In the construction shown, the diaphragm A of re-entrant cone formation is actuated by coils B, C, D located in the annular fields of electromagnets b<1>, c<1>, d<1> respectively. Screens G of copper or aluminium are preferably provided between adjacent magnets and may be earthed. The coils are preferably made of aluminium wire and wound on formers made of shellac treated " detail " or writing paper, copper, or aluminium, the coils C, D being mounted on frusto-conical members c, d secured to the portion a<1> of the diaphragm. The diaphragm, which may be made of parchment, thin sheet aluminium, Bristol board, celluloid, stiff paper or the material known under the registered Trade Mark " Paxolin," is supported in an opening in a baffle board E by a ring a<3> of oiled silk, leather, treated skin &c. clamped between metal rings F, one of which is carried on arms f attached to the magnet system. The ring a<3> may be tensioned slightly to avoid the use of a centring device for the coils. A slack ring is, however, preferably employed, and the coils centred either by narrow leather strips H arranged at the front and back of the diaphragm as shown in Fig. 1, or by means of the device shown in Fig. 2, which is made of thin cardboard or drum parchment and has the outer ring K clamped between the rings F and its centre portion k attached to the centre of the diaphragm. The coils may be connected in series or parallel to the amplifier or to the secondary of an output transformer employed therewith. Preferably, the individual coils are connected to independent secondaries or variable resistances are arranged in series with the field windings of the electromagnets for altering the strength of the magnetic fields.
