Abstract

315,312. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. July 11, 1928, [Convention date]. Hydrocarbons are produced by condensing a diolefine with a hydrocarbon such as toluene, xylene, mesitylene or tetrahydronaphthalene, in presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, the added hydrocarbon being preferably in excess such as 3 to 4-fold excess. In an example, butadiene and toluene are heated with sodium in an autoclave at 80-90‹ C. and the product and unchanged initial materials are distilled off from a small residue of rubber-like substance, the product, 5-phenyl-pentene-(2) being separated by fractional distillation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes other examples in which (1) isoprene, toluene, and sodium are heated in an autoclave at 160‹ C., yielding 3-methyl-5-phenylpentene-(2) or 2-methyl-5-phenylpentene-(2) (2) #-y-dimethyl butadiene, toluene, and sodium are heated as in example 1, the product being 2-3-dimethyl-5-phenylpentene-(2); (3) butadiene. tetrahydronaphthalene, and sodium are heated as described in example 1, yielding butenyl tetrahydronaphthalene. The products are liquids of high boiling points. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
