Starch pastes for use in making printing pastes for printing textiles are made by gelatinizing starch in the presence of soaps or of mixtures of the corresponding acids or esters and alkaline, agents, saponines, sulphonic acids, resins or gums being added, if desired. The term " soap " includes not only the alkali salts of higher unsaturated and saturated fatty acids, e.g. oleic, palmitic, stearic, lauric, myristic, linoleic and like acids, but also alkali salts of resinic acids, and also products or waste liquors containing such substances, such as sulphite cellulose waste liquors. In examples the thickening agents are prepared from (1) wheat starch, sodium oleate and gum arabic, (2) wheat starch, palmitic acid, colophony and trisodium phosphate, (3) potato starch, sodium oleate and saponine, (4) wheat starch, sodium oleate and sodium sulphoresinate (obtained by sulphonating common resin), and (5) wheat starch, sodium oleate and the product obtained by the evaporation of sulphite cellulose waste liquor, with or without saponine.
