Abstract
314,586. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 31, 1928. Fatty acids; soaps; wool-fat, purifying.- Wool fat is treated with organic solvents such as acetone, formic acid or ethyl acetate, to separate the sparingly soluble wool wax from readily soluble wool oil which is treated to obtain unsaponifiable products and fatty acids, from which soaps may be made. The wool oil is heated under pressure with calcium hydroxide, the alcohols being separated from the saponification mixture by extraction with acetone, leaving the calcium soaps which are treated with mineral acid to liberate the fatty acids. These are purified by distillation under reduced pressure, and may be further fractionated to separate the individual acids, or converted to soap by the addition of alkali lye. Specification 13815/84 is referred to.
