Abstract

251,290. Kokatnur, V. R. April 23, 1926. Soaps; glycerine. - Glycerides or other esters are saponified or hydrolyzed by acid, alkali, Twitchell's reagent, or other substance in presence of an organic diluent which is inert to the reacting substances or the products, is not a solvent for the glycerine or other alcohol but preferably is for the glyceride or other ester, and preferably has a boiling-point sufficiently low to allow it to be distilled off with the alcohol at a temperature not injurious to the raw materials or products. In an example, 800 kilograms of tallow, cocoanut oil, linseed oil, olive oil, fish oil, or other animal or vegetable fat is dissolved in 1600-2000 kilograms of kerosene boiling at 215‹ C., and heated in a still with 110-120 kilograms of powdered and substantially anhydrous caustic soda until all the glycerine and part of the kerosene have distilled over at about 200-215‹ C. The remaining kerosene is removed by distillation, or by adding about 30 per cent of water and distilling off the kerosene with steam, or by filtering from the soap and washing with water. Part of the diluent may be left in the soap. The condensed glycerine separates from the condensed kerosene on standing.
