Abstract

313,053. Aktiebolaget G÷taverken. June 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Compound &c. engines.-Exhaust steam from a multiple-expansion reciprocating-engine is conducted wholly or in part to a turbine 8 driving a multiple-stage compressor, the various stages 12, 13 of which compress steam taken from the outlets, receivers or cylinders and supply it to the admission sides of the cylinders. Alternatively air may be compressed and used in a cylinder arranged tandem to one of the power cylinders. The compressor cylinders deal with steam from the second and last stage 3, 4 of the engine. The steam discharged from cylinder 13 may pass to the receiver 6, or to the high pressure supply 5. The low-pressure cylinder exhaust may pass to the condenser 10 past a valve 24<1>. The additional power developed may be used in the main cylinders by using a later cutoff, or by increasing their strokes, or in auxiliary tandem-cylinders. The dimensions of the compressor cylinders may be reduced by supplying them with the initial exhaust steam at the release pressure 23, Fig. 3. This may be taken from the turbine supply through a non-return 24 which leads it to a reservoir 25, or steam may be taken from the cylinder at a point corresponding to 27, Fig. 3, past a non-return valve and supplied to the reservoir. Steam may be taken from the receivers through conduits 20, 21, 22 to feed-water preheaters 19. In a modification, the steam is taken to the stages of a turbo-compressor after passing through the first and second stages of the engine respectively. The high-pressure compressed steam is superheated and supplied to the supply main 5. In a further modification, the compressor supplies air to auxiliary tandem power-cylinders.
