Printing processes.-In the imitation of marble or ceramic designs on wood, metal plates, &c., a photographic negative is obtained from the marble &c, to be imitated, and from it is prepared a diapositive, which may be of natural size, the diapositive serving for the production of an etched copper plate or a lithographic plate A screen is usually interposed, in order to obtain half tones. The printing-plate is inked and the pattern is taken off with a rubber or liko roller and transferred to a metal plate or board. In the case of weak contrasts in the grain of the marble, intensification may be employed, and any veiling may be removed by reduction, for example, by prussiate salts. A marble slab may be ground down until translucent, and then laid directly upon a light-sensitive, plate. The surface to receive the pattern may be first grounded in the ground colour of the marble, for example, in bluish, whitish-yellow, or bluish-white tones- In the case of marble having several colours. different exposures with colour-eliminating filters are made. and a number of printing-plates are prepared. As a source of light for twocolour marble, an arc light, quartz light, or R÷ntgen light are used, and for polychrome marble, sunlight, mercury-vapour light, or ultraviolet light.
