Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces.- Intaglio printing plates or cylinders are produced by taking an ink impression upon transparent material from a half-tone or relief process printing-plate, photographically reproducing the impression on a carbon tissue sheet, and etching the surface of the plate or cylinder through the developed tissue to produce cavities of uniform depth. In one method, the ink impression is made upon a sheet of grained or coated celluloid, and this impression is printed photographically on the carbon tissue. Duplicate printing-surfaces can be prepared by reproducing the impression on more than one carbon tissue. Any retouching necessary is performed on the etched plate or cylinder. In another method, an ink impression is taken upon a transparent sheet as before, this impression is photographed, and from the negative so produced a positive is made which is photographically reproduced on the carbon tissue. The process may be employed to produce a set of plates or cylinders for multi-colour printing.
