Abstract
311,837. Stone, J. A. Jan. 23, 1928. Stays.-The hinged lids of cabinets and boxes are held in an open position by a stay 1 which embodies a pivotally-mounted guide member 25 and an arm 21 with a pin 20 adapted to engage a recess 17 in a block 9 secured to the stay-arm when the lid has been lifted into the open position and then slightly lowered, as shown, the arrangement being such that to close the lid it is first lifted until the pin contacts with the incline 34 of a block 10 and then lowered, the pin 20 then travelling through the passage 12 until it travels up the incline 19 of the block 8. With the pin 20 in this position, it engages with the incline 18 of the block 9 when the lid is being opened from the closed position, and by travelling along the passageway 11 it comes into contact with the incline 15 and rests in a recess 33; by then lowering the lid a little it is guided by the straight edge 16 of the block 10 into the recess 17, the cycle of operations being then completed. The guide block 25 is mounted on a pin 22 which is attached to the box 7 and engages with the slot 27 in the stay-bar 1, the guide block sliding between flanges 2 as the lid is being moved. A friction washer 28 is mounted between the members 21, 25. In a modification the guide blocks for the pin 20 are arranged at the lower end of the stay-bar, which slides in a box-guide positioned near the upper part of the stay-bar when the lid is closed. The stay-bar may also be pivotally attached to the box and the guide member secured to the lid.
