Cellulose ester and ether solutions, and processes for making filaments therefrom.-Threads of artificial silk are prepared by spinning solutions which contain one or more compounds of cellulose and one or more highly complex compounds obtained by the complete or partial polymerization of unsaturated organic compounds. The complex compounds employed may be derived from acrylic acid esters. The lower polymerization products are preferably employed in the first instance, the polymerization being completed in the threads produced. When a common solvent for the components of the spinning solution is not available, each component may be dissolved in a solvent therefor and the solutions mixed. The example describes a solution or dry spinning containing cellulose acetate, polymerized ethyl acrylate, and methyl acetate, suitable spinning conditions being indicated. Specification 308,284 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the polymerization products may be derived from vinyl esters or ethers, or styrol. It also includes examples in which solutions are described containing (1) cellulose acetate, polymerized vinyl acetate, and acetone; (2) ethyl cellulose, polymerized acrylic acid ester, and acetone; and (3) cellulose acetate dissolved in acetone mixed with metastyrol dissolved in benzene. Each of these solutions is suitable for the manufacture of threads by dry spinning, and suitable spinning conditions are indicated in each case. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
