Printing totals.-In a machine provided with a total-taking member adjustable from " add " to any one of a number of total-taking positions, as in Specification 191,351, means moved by the member and controlled by a proprietor's lock is provided to lock the machine against release when the member occupies a predetermined position or any one of a number of such positions. Supported by links 9, 26 is a shaped bar 8 controlled in position by a cam slot 5 in the total lever plate 4 and adapted to co-operate with a pin 11 on a spring-controlled link 12 connected to a lever 13. When the total lever is moved to the first position below " add " as illustrated the pin 11 is engaged by the bar 8 so that the lever 13 obstructs the pin 31 carried by the release shaft 15 and thus prevents operation of the machine. Similar action results from positioning the total lever in the first place above " add " but in all other positions the bar 8 permits the spring 25 to pull the link 12 to the left to free the pin 31. The link 9 is mounted on a pin 27 eccentrically carried by the barrel 17 of a lock, so that the proprietor may at any time by operating this lock lower the bar to render it inoperative. The number of such operations of the lock may be counted at 20.
