Abstract

904,426. Cash registers. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. May 16, 1961 [May 19, 1960], No. 17719/61. Class 106 (1). A cash register includes mechanism for initiating successive cycles of machine operation so that an amount, entered during the preceding amount-entering operation, is entered repeatedly into the machine as long as a control key alone is held depressed, and mechanism to render this ineffective as soon as any of the amount keys are operated. The machine is of the type described in Specification 792,975. On depression of one of of five control keys 21, a pin 22 on it coacts with a curved cam slot 23 in a release plate 24, to push this plate downwards, rocking a release pawl 26 counterclockwise. This releases a stud 30 of a machine release arm 31 so that the spring-urged arm rotates clockwise on a shaft 32 to initiate a machine cycle. A non-repeat pawl 34 attached by a spring 36 to the release pawl 26, rotates counterclockwise about a shaft 29 so that its end 33 will prevent further machine cycles if a control key is inadvertently retained depressed. When no amount keys 41 are depressed, angular camming surfaces 76 on a control plate 63, are in contact with the pins 22 of the control keys. Depression of one of the control keys will thus shift the plate downwards, or counterclockwise, against a spring 70 so that a notch 66 (Fig. 3), presses against a stud 67 of a lever 68. This lever is rocked counterclockwise about a shaft 71 and, by means of a slot and stud 72, rotates a lever 73 counterclockwise about the shaft 32, so that its ear 74 comes into the path of a surface 75 of the non-repeat pawl 34. This prevents the pawl from dropping into the path of stud 30 so that uninterrupted machine cycles can take place whilst the control key is depressed. At the same time, a surface 79 of the lever 68 engages a stud 80 in an arm 81 free on the shaft 32. This arm is connected to a similar one by two rods 82, 83 and counterclockwise movement of these arms moves the rod into a position where it retains, in ineffective position, the zero stop mechanism for each amount bank. A counting device may be provided for counting the number of repeated operation cycles. The repeat mechanism is rendered inoperative if one of the amount keys 41 is depressed, for a pin 42 on the key engages a camming surface 43 to shift a control plate 44 counterclockwise against a spring 47. This rocks a link 45 clockwise and, via arms 50, 54, 57 and links 59, 60 shifts the plate 63 to the right (Fig. 1). This moves the cam surfaces 76 out of, and surfaces 78 in to, contact with the pins 22 of the control keys. Depression of a control key now shifts the plate 63 further to the right so the downward edge of the notch 66 prevents counterclockwise movement of the lever 68. This retains the arm 73 in an ineffective position and permits normal functioning of the non- repeat pawl 34 and machine release pawl 26 to prevent unintentional machine operation.
