Grates; ashpits; air supply, regulating.-In a chain grate stoker of the type in which the space between the upper and lower runs of the grate is divided into compartments having inclined front, rear and side walls converging downwardly towards ash-discharge openings or slots and in which air is supplied to the compartments to pass through them to the grate, the space surrounding the compartments is open freely on all sides to an air supply entering through the open sides of the grate frame and passing into the compartments through openings in the front and rear walls thereof. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the compartments A are provided with valves G for the admission of air in regulated quantities from the surrounding space and with riddling valves F for the discharge of ash. The sides of the grate frame are open to air conduits N. The inner side walls D of the compartments terminate short of the upper run of the grate to allow for the passage of air over the whole of the grate. In a modification, the riddling valves are dispensed with and air enters the space around the compartments through the lower run of the grate.
