Porous compositions.-Porous plates for electrolysis or elctro-osmose or for filtering liquids or gases have chromium oxide as base material. Several methods of making the plates are described. According to one method, chromium oxide is mixed with organic or other compounds of chromium, for example chromic acid or chromium nitrate, which when heated yield chromium oxide. The mixture is pressed into moulds and heated. The porosity of the product will vary according to the proportions of the mixture, the pressure, and the temperature and duration of heating. The porosity may be increased by adding to the mixture other materials, such as common salt or sawdust, which are burnt during the heating or afterwards removed by solvents. According to a second method chromium oxide with which chromium trioxide may be mixed is sintered, and the solid body obtained is given the required shape by grinding. According to a third method chromium oxide is mixed with a binding agent, such as cement, and allowed to set.
