Abstract
305,022. Siemens & Halske Akt.- Ges. Jan. 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Porous compositions.-Porous bodies, particularly electrolytic diaphragms, are produced by partially setting a silicate or other similar acid- and alkali-proof substance, grinding the mass to a suitable size of grain and then compressing or moulding it. The mass may be heated, if necessary. Suitable substances may be added to control the passage of ions, fo example, metallic oxides may be added if the diaphragm is to be used as an anode. To increase the porosity, naphthalene or a similar substance may be added to the partially set mixture and subsequently burnt out. As an example, a mixture comprising 40 gr. of aluminium oxide and 20 grains of an alkali silicate and silicates of metals of the alkaline earth group or aluminium, is allowed partially to set and is then ground. If the mass is compressed to a plate at a pressure of 200 atmospheres, a pore volume of about 30 per cent is obtained. If an equal amount of chromium oxide is added to the above mixture together with 10 per cent naphthalene and the compressed plates are burnt out, a pore volume of 36 per cent is obtained.
