Abstract

308,117. Thornton, J. E. May 25,1928. Compound transparent sheets; ornamental plates. -A non-splintering transparent sheet is made by joining two compound sheets each consisting of a sheet of glass A, a strongly adherent substratum B, and a sheet of cellulose acetate C. The cellulose acetate surfaces are softened by a suitable solvent and are united in a suitably padded press. The substratum B is applied as a thin solution of gelatine. &c. and cellulose acetate in one or more common solvents, such as acetic or glacial acetic acid, and diluted with a suitably miscible spirit such as acetone, a few drops of a hardening solution, such as chromealum or formalin, and if desired a few drops of glycerine, being added. The glass is cleaned and if necessary roughened with hydrofluoric acid or sodium silicate and the above solution, when filtered, is applied in a layer about 0.0001 inch thick. When dry, a cellulose acetate sheet C is applied to the substratum either as a solution which is allowed to dry or as a formed sheet which has applied thereto a substratum as applied to the glass. The edges of the sheets may have a bevelled groove which is filled with paste or may be sealed by dipping in a, trough of suitable solution such as gelatine and cellulose dissolved in acetic acid and acetone. The coatings may be applied by similar apparatus to that used for coating photographic plates or by slotted troughs and the thickness may be regulated by scrapers. Suitable dyes &c., to form pictures or designs may be applied to the substratum or the cellulose surface.
