Abstract

305,250. Watt, R. A. W., and Bell. L. H. Bainbridge-. Oct. 3, 1927. Addition to 252,263. Directive signalling; thermionic relays. - In order to remove the 180‹ ambiguity, the directional apparatus of the kind described in the parent Specification is combined with a non- directional aerial 1 voltages from which are applied through amplifiers 2, 2<a> to a coil 3, which is coupled in turn through an amplifier 4 to a resistance 5 inserted in the anode circuit of a cathode-ray oscillograph 7 so as to modify the discharge stream. Or a resistance such as 5 may be inserted between the anode of the oscillograph and the leak resistances connected to the de flecting-plates of the oscillograph; or between the cathode of the oscillograph and a control electrode or grid inserted between the cathode and anode. Or, as shown in Fig. 4, the voltages from the unidirectional aerial may be applied to a coil 11 to create an axial magnetic field, which in turn controls the focal distance of the ionic beam passing through the deflector plates 9 of the oscillngraph. Or the non-directional voltages may be applied to the filament of the oscillograph so as to control the electron emission. In such arrangements the relative brightness of the indicating spot indicates the true direction of the received signals. Fig. 5 shows the complete installation. Directional voltages from the aerials NS, EW are applied to the corresponding deflection plates of the oscillograph 7 through tuning, amplifying, filtering, frequency-changing, and phase-adjusting means AN, AE of known type, whilst AV represents similar means for controlling the voltages received by the non-directional aerial and applied for example to the control-electrode 10 of the oscillograph.
