Abstract

303,821. Gull, A. E. Oct. 5, 1927. Divided on 303,778. Apparatus for making filaments.-In the manufacture of artificial silk by the dry-spinning method in which the filaments are extruded into heated air, the air is heated by a number of heater elements, one or some of which are not varied when in operation which the other or others are varied to effect temperature control. In the apparatus shown, a chamber 2, in which the filaments extruded from a nozzle 3 pass down a central tube 4, has an air-inlet 2<a> and an air outlet 2<b> and a sheet iron spiral duct 5 surrounding the lower end of the tube 4. Between the duct 5 and the chamber 2 is an annular air-tight heating jacket 6 in which are disposed electric heaters 7, preferably heaters giving dark heat rays only, controlled by a thermostat 8, the leads 7<a>, 7<b> of both the thermostat and the heaters 7 being connected to a control 9. The chamber 2 is also provided with a number of heating elements (not shown), which are invariable when in operation. The apparatus operates similarly to that of Specification 303,778, to which reference is made. Specification 301,141 also is referred to.
