Abstract

303,044. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 26, 1927. Substituted guanidines are obtained by treating a substituted thiourea with an organic or inorganic zinc compound and ammonia or a salt or substitution product of ammonia in the presence of a small quantity of caustic alkali or alkaline earth at an elevated temperature. The oxide, hydroxide, chloride, sulphate, formate or carbonate of zinc and aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic amines or hydrazines, such as benzyl-, methyl-, dimethyl-, or diethyl-amine, aniline, piperidine, phenylhydroxylamine or phenylhydrazine may be used. In examples (1) diphenylguanidine is obtained by heating under pressure thiocarbanilide, ammonia, zinc hydroxide and calcium hydroxide; (2) triphenylguanidine by heating thiocarbanilide, aniline, zinc sulphate and caustic soda lye; (3) diphenylbenzylguanidine from thiocarbanilide and benzylamine; (4) diphenylmethylguanidine from thiocarbanilide and methylamine; (5) diphenyldimethylguanidine from thiocarbanilide and dimethylamine; (6) triphenylaminoguanidine, together with a red azo compound produced by oxidation of this compound, from thiocarbanilide and phenylhydrazine; (7) triphenyloxyguanidine from thiocarbanilide and phenylhydroxylamine.
