Abstract

Cutting-apparatus .-A shortbread or like cake is formed from a circular piece of dough 3, the centre of which is recessed, or, if desired, entirely removed, to receive a liquid container or bottle. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the centre is removed by the die shown in Fig. 1, the die being left in the dough during baking. The opening 4 has an extension, formed by a radial portion 2 of the die, to receive the neck of the bottle 7. The chamfer 6 may be formed after baking or the die may be formed to produce it before baking. The bottle is secured to the cake by icing 8. Fig. 5 shows a machine for stamping out the cakes. A lever 11 is connected by a link 13 to a rod 14 on the die 15 which is slidable in a member 16, the member 16 being depressed by a spring 20 engaged by a collar 19 on the rod 14. On depressing the lever 11, the members 15, 16 descend together until the member 16 contacts with the platform 10. The diemember 15 then descends until the spring detent 25 snaps into the hole 26. On raising the lever 11, the members 15, 16 ascend together until the member 16 contacts with the sleeve 17. The detent is then disengaged and the die rises to resume the position shown in Fig. 5. Provision is made for the escape and entry of air from and to the space between the die and the dough during the operations. According to the first Provisional Specification round pieces of dough are placed on an endless conveyer which brings them, one by one, under a stamping machine. After baking, a conveyer takes the cakes to a machine, which delivers the bottle from a hopper to the cakes. According to the second Provisional Specification a depression is made in the cake for reception of the bottle by a former comprising a dish-shaped piece of metal, or a solid piece of metal, the former remaining in the cake during baking.
