Abstract
302,115. Lilienfeld, L. June 20, 1927. Yarns &c., treating with liquids. - Yarns or fabrics of animal or vegetable fibres such as flax, hemp, linen, ramie, jute, cotton, or wool, are dressed, sized, or printed with solutions of cellulose from which cellulose may be precipitated or regenerated, gas, for example, air, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, or nitrogen being emulsified with the cellulose solution under pressure, or materials such as alkali carbonate, sulphite, or sulphide being mixed with the solution of cellulose so that air bubbles are formed in the coating material as regenerated or precipitated. As solutions of cellulose, there may be employed pure or crude viscose matured or not, solutions of cellulose in ammoniacal solutions of copper oxide, solutions in calcium thiocyanate, or in caustic alkali containing urea, thiourea, or guanidine. The cellulose is precipitated by known precipitating baths or regenerated by heating, steaming, or allowing the treated material to stand. The gas may be expelled to allow the walls of the bubbles to collapse by boiling or treating the material with water under pressure. There may be added to the solution of cellulose, a sizing agent such as starch, dextrin, albumen or gelatine; a softening agent such as glycerine, soap, Turkey red oil, glucose, castor oil, or paraffin oil; a filling material such as talc or clay; a pigment such as zinc white, soot, or powdered mica; a dyestuff, or any two or more of the above substances. Material treated by the process has a soft and warm feel, is downy, resembles the natural fibre, and fissures do not occur in the coating when the material is stretched.
