Abstract

510,511. Cellulose ethers ; treating textiles with liquids. WALLACH, R. Nov. 2, 1937, No. 26738. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] A mass of loose cellulosic fibres of textilemaking length is treated with an etherifying agent in presence of alkali, shredding of the ' fibres before or during the reaction being avoided, and the reaction is continued until the cellulose of the fibres is converted throughout each fibre to a cellulose ether. The reaction is discontinued when the cellulose ether is soluble in alkali, but insoluble in water. The temperature of the reaction is maintained higher than that at which the alkali present would gelatinize the cellulose ether fibres. Cellulose ether fibres of textile-making length capable of being separated by carding, combing, or the like, are obtained. These may be twisted, spun, or otherwise formed into yarns, threads, fabrics, or cords. The cellulosic fibres may be etherified while in a swollen state, and the product may be purified, washed, and dried without exerting any substantial pressure thereon in the fibrous mass. Natural or artificial cellulosic filaments or fibres such as rayon fibres, or staple fibres of cotton, hemp, jute, flax, or straw, may be subjected to the treatment. Waste cellulose hydrate filaments cut to staple length may be used. The fibres may be treated with a dilute solution of a strong alkali until they are thoroughly impregnated and swollen, but not gelatinized, and then after centrifuging and pressing, they are treated.with an etherifying agent. Caustic soda or potash, dimethylamine, or a quaternary base, e.g., tetra-benzyl ammonium hydroxide, may be used as the alkali. During etherification, when starting from cellulose hydrate fibres, the ratio by weight of dry cellulose to solid alkali calculated as NaOH should preferably not exceed 1 : 0.2. The etherifying agent may be ethyl chloride, diethyl sulphate, ethylene chlorohydrin, epichlorohydrin, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, or a glycide. When using ethylene oxide the proportion is preferably not less than 0.3 mols per mol of cellulose. Etherification may be carried out in a closed vessel at room temperature or at slightly raised temperature, e.g., 25‹C. Cellulose ether fibres which are completely soluble in 9 per cent. aqueous caustic soda at 0‹C. are obtained. Instead of carrying out the treatment with cellulose fibres alone, these may be mixed with inert fibres, e.g., asbestos, glass, rubber, or synthetic resin fibres prior to the treatment. The cellulose ether fibres may be used in the production of textile fabrics, unwoven structures, cords, ropes, and motor tyre cords. They may be used in the production of articles which are to be stiffened and such treatment may consist in the application of a dilute alkali so as partly to gelatinize the fibres in the textile structure, and then in the removal of the solvent.
