Wet separating; washing-apparatus with screens.-A process for the separation of clay and clay-like constituents from materials such as coal consists in using solutions of alkali xanthates as. the washing liquid and treating the products on fine sieves. In the plant shown, the material to. be treated is fed through a hopper b to a worm a to which a mixture of xanthate and soda solution is admitted through a pipe t. The material freed from clay is delivered through a shoot k to a sieve l where it is washed by a spray m, the purified product being discharged at n. Material' passing through the sieve, l is led by a trough p to a sieve e to which also the fine slime from the worm a is led, and on which the materials are washed by a spray f. The separated materials are discharged at h, q. The sieves may be formed with slits instead of mesh and may be spring- supported or otherwise adapted for vibration.
