Abstract

Strainers having sheet straining-materials.-A flanged cylindrical straining basket b is supported by a web a<3> which separates the inlet a<1> of a casing a from the outlet a<2>. A rotating tube d passes upward through the base of the casing and is bent outwardly and upwardly to form a chamber d<2> adjacent to and open towards the basket b. The upper end of the chamber d' is guided by an annular groove f in the web. A plate d', which closes the bottom of the strainer, and a casing o<1>, to which liquid under pressure is supplied by a pipe p, are formed integral with the part d<2>. As the tube d and the parts cannected thereto are revolved by means of a gear wheel h gearing with a pinion i driven by a motor j, the part of the strainer at any instant between the casing o<1> and the part d<2> is cleansed by a reverse flow of liquid, impurities being carried away through the tube d. The lower end of the tube d may be open to the atmosphere, a flap valve r being provided to prevent the ingress of air. A modification is described in which the pipe p and part o<1> are omitted, the reverse flow being that of strained liquid from within the basket. The port d<2> may have apertures so that jets of liquid are directed at a suitable angle against the basket. The liquid passing down the pipe d may be used to drive a turbine or other motor.
