Nov. 14, 1927, [Convention date] Cupola furnaces.-The lower part of the shaft of a cupola furnace is surrounded by an annular chamber 9 which communicates with the shaft proper through upper and lower openings i, e, and acts as a refining-chamber for the molten metal. The central part of the shaft at the lower end is occupied by an air supply tuyere a having radial downwardly-inclined ports c at a higher level than the openings i, the tuyere being arranged to hang up the solid part of the charge, and to prevent it from obstructing the openings i and ports c. Jets from a liquid fuel burner are directed through the ports c, and the flames pass into the refining-chamber through the openings i.
