Hydrocarbons, cracking ; hydrogenation, destructive; spray evaporators.- Oils are cracked and hydrogenated by passing them after heating in counter current to a flow of heated gas, e.g. steam, the mixed gases being reheated in a separate chamber and finally passed upwards through a stream of crude oil. Steam from a boiler 1 is passed through a superheater 2 into the first heating chamber 3 where it is mixed with oil from a pipe 20. The mixed vapours are superheated in a chamber 4 and pass into a further heating chamber 5 where thev meet a downward spray of crude oil from a pipe 25. The mixed vapours are again heated in a superheater 6 and passed to a final pair of chambers 7 to which oil is admitted by pipes 27 the products passing through pipes 18 to a superheater 8 and then to a heater exchanger 9, where the vapours are cooled by heat intercharge with the crude stock and condensed in condenser 10, the permanent gas being separated in a trap 12<a> and stored in a holder 13. The treatment chambers comprise a steel shell F, Fig. 2 lined with insulating material G and refractory material H. The oil is sprayed through nozzles 21, Fig. 6, on to freely mounted discs 28 and trickles through grids K built up as shown in Fig. 7.
