Abstract
299,000. Johnston, J. T. M. July 19, 1927. Cauldrons; tar macadam, plant for making. - Vehicular apparatus for drying sand or stone chippings and mixing the same with tar for light repairing operations, such as patching, comprises a mixer 40 situated in the upper part of the apparatus between a receptacle 10 for the grit at one end and the cauldron 4 for the tar at the other end. Further, a return flue 30 is provided within the cauldron to lead the furnace gases from beneath the receptacle 10 and cauldron 4 to a space 32 arranged below and around the mixer and connected to an uptake 34. The cauldron shown is that described in Specification 285,567, the flue tubes 30, leading from a smoke-box 28, constituting a pre-melting grid. A damper 48 allows the furnace gases to pass directly to the uptake if desired. The mixer has a semi-cylindrical bottom projecting into the space 32 and is provided with rotary stirring blades. The grit receptacle is preferably divided by a partition 16 into separate compartments having removable covers 17, one compartment being used for drying the grit, and the other for heating it.
