Ball and like mills. - A combined drying and pulverizing apparatus has the rotating element 2 disposed in a stationary fluid-tight casing 6 in which is circulated a current of hot gas and in which entraining elements 11, 18 circulate the material to be ground before the material, together with the current of gas, enters the grinding element. The tube mill 2 is mounted in bearings 7, 8 and is driven by a pinion 15 engaging a spur wheel 14. Surrounding and spaced from the mill with which it rotates is a cylinder 12 provided internally and externally with curved blades 18, 11 respectively which are oppositely inclined. A feed inlet 5 and an annular chamber 22 provided with outlet orifices 24 for hot gases are formed on the fixed casing 6 and the material together with the drying gases are moved along the length of the cylinder by the blades 11 and then back again by the blocks 18, the material being then scooped up by the spiral blades 19 and delivered through an orifice 21 into the interior of the tube mill 2. A plate 17 fixed to the casing 6 deflects the material from the outer blades 11 to the inner blades 18. A separator 27 is fixed to the end of the mill and the coarse material is returned to the mill by a screw conveyer 29. The feed and gas inlets may be placed at the other end of the casing 6 and the drum 12 omitted, the blades 18 being mounted on the shell 2. Conduits 25 provided with registers 26 regulate the amount of air supplied to the interior of the grinding apparatus.
