Vapour apparatus, arrangements of.-In means for extinguishing back ignitions in mercury vapour rectifiers by applying a negative potential to grids associated with the anodes, a glow discharge tube is used to control the operation of a switch in the grid circuits in response to excess current or lack of balance in the load circuit of the rectifier. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, excess current in the load circuit, which includes the primary a of a transformer, raises the secondary voltage of that transformer sufficiently to cause a discharge in the tube b thus closing the switch c and applying negative potential from a battery e to the grids f of the rectifier g. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, current transformers a<1>, a<2>, a<3> are provided in each line and connected as shown through glow tubes b<1>, b<2>, b<3> and resistances d'. d<2>, d<3> to the energizing coil c of the switch so that in the event of unbalance arising, the coil is energized and the switch passes from the position shown, in which a positive potential is applied to the grids f from a battery e', to the alternative position in which a negative potential is applied to the grids from a battery e<2>. Operation of the switch may be retarded by providing one of the contacts with a resilient extension.
