Abstract
293,010. Talbot, B. June 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Open-hearth furnaces. - In a furnace as described in Specification 235,346 having one or more auxiliary baths at substantially the same level as the main hearth and at one or both ends thereof, the auxiliary baths are made longitudinally movable in relation to the main furnace. As shown in connection with a reversible regenerative tilting furnace each auxiliary bath 6 is mounted on rollers 15 and communicates with the main hearth chamber 1 through a throat structure 7 formed with ports 10, 11 for the supply of gas and air respectively from the regenerators 14, 8. The throat section carries water-cooled chills 19, 20 which abut against similar chills 19<1>, 20<1> on the main and auxiliary baths, and the joints between the pairs of chills are kept tight by the rams or other devices used to move the auxiliary baths to or from their working position. Water seats may be provided as shown at 17, 18 in the gas and air passages leading from the regenerators. Alternatively the joint may be made by abutting water-cooled chills. The joint between the chills 20, 20<1> is preferably clamped so that the throat section moves with the bath 6 when the latter is retracted to allow the furnace to tilt. The auxiliary baths may have gas ports 9, 9<1> at both ends, and air ports 9‹ at their inner ends, the gas ports being used alternately according to the direction of flow of the main body of the heating gases. When the furnace is heated by coke-oven or other rich gas the gas-heating regenerator is dispensed with, and the throat section is mounted on the same carriage as the bath.
