291,437. Siemens - Schuckertwerke Akt.-Ges., (Assignees of Siemens-Schuckertwerke Ges.). June 3, 1927, [Convention date]. Charges, cooling; gases, supplying; covers.-In an annealing-furnace of the kind in which the charge 4 is heated in an inert atmosphere and cooled, on the termination of the heating process, by a thermo-syphon circulation of the inert gas through the furnace 1 and a cooling-chamber 5, the latter is arranged, as shown, within the furnace structure. The chamber 5, Fig. 1, is provided with a cooling-coil 6 and communicates with the furnace 1 through openings 7, 8 which are adapted to be closed, during heating, by wedge-shaped blocks 9, 10 operated by rods 11, 12 passing through stuffing-boxes 13, 14 in the outer casing 2a. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the cooling-chamber 5 is formed between the sides of a movable cover 15 and a hood 18 dipping into a seal 20, communication between the furnace 1 and chamber 5 being established by raising the cover 15 sufficiently to provide openings 22 while still maintaining the seal 20.
