Charges, cooling; gases, supplying. - In an annealing-furnace, in which the charge 1 is heated in an atmosphere of inert gas, the charge is cooled, on the termination of the annealing process, by circulating the inert gas through a furnace 2 and a cooler 6 by means of a pump 5. The cooler 6 may be of the air or liquid type and a modification is described in which this device is replaced by one or more additional annealing-furnaces in which the charge is preheated by the circulating gas.
