Abstract
291,360. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. May 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Cellulose carboxylates. - Cellulose esters of fatty acids are prepared by a process in which ordinary or pre-treated cellulose is treated with a halide of a lower fatty acid in presence of an organic base and an indifferent organic medium, which dissolves, at least partly, the addition product of acid halide and organic base formed in the esterification mixture but is not a solvent for the cellulose ester, which is formed. Halogen aromatic hydrocarbons are particularly suitable for use as the indifferent organic medium. In an example, cotton is added to a mixture of chlorobenzene, pyridine and acetyl chloride. When formation of the cellulose ester is finished, the liquid is decanted from the cellulose acetate and the latter is purified by extracting it with boiling ethanol and then with hot water.
