Sampling liquids.-Comprises a hollow cylinder 1 open at both ends, a valve 3 adapted to seat on and close the lower end of the cylinder, a valve rod 7 fixed to the valve and mounted inside the cylinder co-axial therewith and slidable relatively thereto, and eccentrically loaded means 4 pivotally mounted at the upper end of the rod for tripping said cylinder and for attachment of the suspending chain &c. The cylinder' 1 is suspended by means of a U-shaped link 3 on the hook 3 behind which is the loaded link 4 provided with a pivot 5 on the hook and connected to the suspending chain by an eyelet 6. The hook 3 receives the screwed upper end of the valve rod 7. When the apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, is lowered to the required depth, the link 2 is released either by the valve 8 resting on the bottom or by jerking the suspending chain, the eccentrically loaded link 4 forcing the link 2 out of the notched or hooked member 3, and the cylinder 1 drops on to the valve trapping a sample of liquid. In a modification, a piston is fitted to the rod so that it sweeps through the container when the latter drops ejecting any liquid which may have collected in the container while. the device was passing through upper layers of the liquid. A thermometer or other instrument may be fitted to the device.
