Abstract
289,140. Gramophone Co., Ltd., and Buckle, H. L. T. Jan. 19, 1927. Magazine gramophones. - In magazine talking machines wherein records are transferred singly from a magazine to the turntable by a swinging arm, the arm carries number of radiating resilient fingers provided with means such as hooks to engage the edge of the uppermost record the arm is lowered, and a spider is provided to spread the fingers for releasing the record. An arm 12, Fig. 1, adapted to swing with a pivot 13 between a position over a support 8 for a stack of records and a position over a turntable 5 is branched at 30, 31 to overlie hook-ended fingers 32, Fig. 3, connected by spring strips 32<1> to a boss 33 fixed to the arm and carrying a sleeve 33<1> through which can slide a spindle 35 carrying a spider 37 having arms 38 extending below the fingers 32. The pivot 13 can swing, and also slide, vertically, in bearin<g>'s carried by a bracket 16 mounted on the base board 1 from which an arm 6 extends to provide a guide for a sleeve 7 carrying the support 8 for a pile of records threaded on a spindle 9 extending through the sleeve and resting on one end of a pivoted lever 47. The other end of the lever 47 bears against one end of a lever 44 adapted to be rocked on a pivot 45 by a box cam 46 on a spindle 29, the other end of this lever engaging the spindle 13. The spindle 29 also carries cam mechanism for reciprocating a slide 28, Fig. 1, and is adapted to be clutched to the turntable spindle 4 or other constantly driven part, at the times when a fresh record is to be fed, by means such as a reversal of travel of the sound-box on completion of playing. The plate 28 acts to rock a lever 17 on a pivot 18, which lever engages by a pin 25 with a slide 19 engaging a guide 20 fixed to a ring 21 connected by a spring catch 23 with the spindle 13 so as to swing the arm 12 between its two positions. In operation to supply a fresh record, the spindle 29 is clutched to a driven part and acts first through the cam 46 and lever 44 to lower the spindle 13 with arm 12 so that the hooks of the resilient fingers 32 engage the top record on the support 8 and then raise it. The plate 28 now acts on the lever 17 to swing the arm 12 and record over the turntable where the record is released bv the cam 46 effecting a lowering of the spindle 13 and arm 12 so that the spindle 35 is brought against the turntable spindle and causes the spider 37 to spread the hook fingers and release the record. The spindle arm is then raised and swung back over the stack whereupon the spindle 29 is no longer operated. The plate 28 acts on the lever 17 in one direction through a lever 51 pivoted on the same axis 18 as, and connected by a spring 52 with, the lever 17 whereby lost motion is provided sufficient to allow for the necessarily greater vertical movement of the spindle 13 and arm 12 when over the stack. Records of 10 inches and 12 inches diameter may be stacked indiscriminately, the fingers being provided with two sets of hooks 34. To permit of stacking the records the arm 12 is lifted to disengage a pin 49 from a hole 50 in a flange 16<1> of the bearing of the spindle 13 by which the arm is guided in its vertical movements, and can then be swung clear of the stack support 8 on which the records are stacked over the centering pin 9 protruded by the lever 47 and cam 46. A gripped record may be manually released at any time by lifting a 'button 41, Fig. 3, connected to .t bifurcated lever 39 connected to the arm 12 by a spring strip 40 and engaging the spider 37. A record may be removed from the turntable after playing by a vertically movable member operating to tilt the record clear of the spindle so that it can be slewed off as described in Specification 188,787.
