Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In packing of thetype in which a coned member g rotating with the shaft is pressed towards a stationary coned seating c<1> by means of a spring- pressed plate e, the member g is recessed to receive an insertion k of leather, or similar material, which forms the wearing surface. The leather may be backed by rubber or similar material l. A ball thrust-bearing m may be inserted between the member g and the plate e, or the member g may be formed with a flat or coned surface engaging the plate e. A stop h on the shaft engages a slot, i in the member g. Specification 178,963 is referred to.
