Measures of length.- A vernier measuring device comprises a scale a graduated in units with which co-operates a vernier divided for measurements to <1>/n and a second scale the length of the divisions of which is <a>/n which co-operates with a second vernier. In the sliding callipers, Fig. 1, the beam 1 has a millimetre scale a with which co-operates a vernier c ten divisions on which are equal to nine millimetres. The second scale b is graduated in tenths of millimetres and with it co-operates a vernier d ten divisions of which are equal to nine tenths of a millimetre. A magnifying glass 3 formed by a piece of semicylindrical cross section fixed by a mounting hinged on the axis 4 on the slider is arranged over this vernier. In a modification the first scale is in inches and tenths and the ten divisions of the vernier are made equal to nine tenths of an inch. The second scale is graduated for hundredths of an inch and the vernier gives the thousandth. The scales co-operate with two verniers disposed at different levels on the slider.
