Abstract
285,970. Sinclair, H. Nov. 23, 1926. Hydraulic transmission apparatus for road vehicles, locomotives, cranes, and other selfpropelled machines comprises an hydraulic coupling B of the F÷ttinger or other hydro-kinetic type associated with a friction or other clutch C which serves for the usual clutching and declutching operations, the hydraulic coupling being always run full or partly full of liquid so that no tanks, valves, &c are needed for using it as a clutch. The hydraulic coupling may be situated between the engine A and change-speed gear D, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be in any other position. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the impeller 2 of the coupling and the casing 4 are fixed to the engine shaft 1, and the secondary rotor 3 is fixed to a shaft 17 connected by a friction clutch 12, 13 to the driving shaft of the vehicle. A dog-clutch 18 is provided for coupling the shaft 17 direct to the casing 4 and the engine shaft 1 if the hydraulic coupling fails. The engine shaft may have a central duct by which oil is supplied from the engine lubricating system to the coupling. In the construction shown in Fig. 7 a differential gear is dispensed with, two hydraulic couplings 24, 25 being provided which are positively driven from the driving shaft 20 and drive the wheel axles 26, 27 either directly or through reducing gearing. The bevel gearing 21, 22 may be either reducing gear, as shown, or multiplying gear.
