Abstract

284,380. Spence, W. L. Oct. 23, 1926. Cam-actuated pump; stroke, varying; pumps with reciprocating and rotating piston; two barrels in series.-A variable-stroke pump or compressor with a rotary and reciprocating plunger comprises a tilting plate K surrounding the plunger F and engaged by two projections H, H<1> thereon. The plate is mounted on trunnions and is adjusted by a screw O against the action of a spring N to vary the plunger stroke. The plunder is hollow and has a port G which registers alternately with suction and delivery ports. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the plunger has two diameters, the larger portion working in a cylinder G<2> and the smaller in a cylinder G'. The cylinder G<2> delivers to a sight chamber which feeds the cylinder G<1>. The tilting plate K is engaged by balls J<2>, J<3> half sunk in the plunger and a fixed collar H<3> thereon. The plate is tilted by means of two pins O, O<1> with inclined surfaces.
