Abstract

283,370. Gminder, E. March 17, 1927. Breaking and scutching apparatus. - Dry stalks carrying the heads, seeds and leaves are cut into portions of desired length, and those portions which are suitable for immediate further treatment are carried directly to breaking-rollers and a cleaning apparatus, while those portions which carry the seeds &c. are passed to a thrashing-machine and from there carried to join the first-mentioned portions for treatment with them. The stalks are laid across a conveyer 9, Fig. 1, comprising a series of parallel spaced tapes and are cut by a series of saws 7 projecting through a plate 8 and situated between the tapes. The material is held by a second similar conveyer 10. The conveyers approach one another at the delivery end and are both passed over the drum 2 to deliver the material on to aprons 13, 14, Fig. 2. The number of cut portions of the stalks that fall on each apron is determined by an adjustable gate 19. The apron 13 leads to rollers 15, 16 and a scutcher or cleaner 17 preferably of the Crighton type. The apron 14 leads in the opposite direction to a thrashing-device 30, comprising a drum 21, spiked casing 22, and grid 23. The material is delivered on to a belt 24 and is carried on to the belt 13.
