Abstract

Thermionic heterodyne receivers.-The higher of the two frequencies resulting from the combination of a received wave and a locally-generated wave is fed to an amplifier through a piezoelectric crystal. The sum frequency is preferred to the difference frequency, as the sharp selection afforded by the crystal is then less detrimental to the quality of the reception. As shown, a tuned loop aerial 1 is connected to the grid circuit of a valve 3, and the local oscillator 4 is .coupled to its plate circuit, which also includes a circuit 5 tuned to the sum frequency. This frequency is selectively transmitted to resistancecoupled amplifiers 7, 8 by the piezo-electric crystal 6. Resistance-coupled radio-frequency, resultant-frequency and audio-frequency stages may be used, preferably in the form of multiplestage valves.
