Abstract

Discharging. - For the purpose of removing liquid from the interior of a rotating cylinder, one or each end thereof is provided with a hollow conical or cylindrical member communicating with the axial outlet and provided with a spiral passage, gutter or the like to guide the liquid to the outlet. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder 1 has an axial discharge outlet 3 and a conical discharge member 2 terminating at the outlet. The base 5 of the cone is closed and is of smaller diameter than the cylinder. An opening is made in the side of the cone near the base and the bucket 7 at the opening receives liquid fed along the cylinder by the spiral 9 or by other conveying means on the cylinder surface. The liquid is conveyed through the cone to the outlet by a spiral wall 10. In modifications the wall 10 is replaced by gutters or channels pressed in the surface of the cone. The base 5 of the cone 2 may be of the same diameter as that of the cylinder and apertures are then provided to enable the liquid to pass between the cone and the cylinder wall. The axis of the cone may be inclined to that of the cylinder so that the base of the cone is only in contact with the cylinder at one point. The cone may be replaced by a cylinder or may have a cylindrical extension at its base. In the modification shown in Figs. 11, 12, the end of the cylinder containing the discharge outlet carries a hollow cylinder 45 with an opening 48. A gutter 47 leads from the wall of the outer cylinder 43 through the opening 48 to a point close to the axis. Separate gutters may be used outside and inside the cylindrical chamber 45.
