Abstract
276,046. Normanville, E. J. de. April 21,1926. Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which different epicyclic trains are brought successively into the driving combined train, comprises a main train or unit with interengaging planets 4, 7 carried by a brake drum 6. The planets 4 mesh with a central gear 3 fast on the driving-shaft 2 and with an internally-toothed ring 1 constituting the driven element. The planets 7 mesh with a sun gear 9 which can be clutched solid with the shaft 2, or driven at definite speeds below and above that of the shaft 2 through additional trains. In the arrangement shown, a second train 12, 13, 15, 17, 18 is similar to the train 3, 4, 1, 7, 9. By applying brakes to drums 6, 11, 16, 20 in succession, reversed driving and three reduced forward rising speeds are obtained. When a splined sleeve 24 is slid to the right to engage a clutch 23, 22, there is solid driving. When the sleeve 24 is slid to the left to engage a clutch 32, 31, and a drum 30 is held fast, there is overdriving, that is the element 1 is driven faster than the shaft 2. In a modification, between the drums 11, 16 are two separate three-element trains producing the same ratios as the train described.
