Abstract
257,837. Wiedmaier, A. A., and Field, L. M. March 17, 1926. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is combined with the differential or balance gearing of a vehicle, all the planetary gears being supported on one spider 30. In an arrangement yielding solid driving and two reduced speeds, the planet pinions 33, 34 of separate trains are loose on the arms 31 of the spider outside the planet pinions 32 of the balance train gear. The driving side wheels 17, 18 of the trains are fast upon a wheel 5 secured to a rotary gear casing 6. Loose side wheels 24, 21 are fast upon sleeves 23, 20 adapted to turn one within the other. For the solid drive, the sleeve 20 is connected to the casing 6 by a clutch 42. The reduced speeds are effected by connecting these sleeves alternatively to a non-rotary web 38 by clutches 42, 41. More than two such reducing trains may be used. With a single train, two speeds only are produced. The loose planet gears 33, 34 tend to slide radially outwards. This may be counteracted by conical bearings separately fast on the spider arms, or, as shown, by a concave annular abutment 36 fast upon the inside of the casing 6.
