Softening wood by mechanical treatment.-In softening wood by the method described in Specification 131,128, a certain additional pressure is applied to the wood across the grain, either by means of movable walls c, e to the mould, or by forcing the wood into the mould. After the full longitudinal compression has been obtained, the wood is held between end plates f by means of rods g and bolts j until dry. Wood which has been softened in this manner may be rehardened by dry heating, as in a stream of hot air.
