Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for; cooling.- Packing, which is especially applicable for the shaft of a rotary compressor for a refrigerating machine, comprises a bush 8, having a flange engaged by a ring 11 secured to the casing and by a ring 10 carried by a flexible metal sleeve 12 secured to the ring 11. The bush 8 cantains packing 16 and is carried round with the shaf by means of a clutch 17. The packing chamber 9 is filled with oil supplied to the bearing 14 by a passage 13, and the casing is cooled by a water jacket 15. In a modification the packing 16 is dispensed with, the bush 8 being carried by a flexible metal sleeve secured to the shaft.
