Abstract

Grates.-In a step grate with movable steps, the latter are mounted on transverse supports which are reciprocated by means attached to their ends and arranged external to the ash-pit. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the transverse supports 4 for the movable steps 2 are provided with rollers 9 supported on runways 10. To the first, third and fifth supports are attached links 12 which pass through stuffing boxes 24 in the side frame 7 and are connected to bars 13<1>, 13<11>. The second, fourth and sixth supports are similarly connected to bars 15<1>, 15<11>, and links 16, 17 connected to an oscillating lever 18 and to the bars 13<1>, 13<11>, 15<1>, 15<11> serve to move adjacent movable steps in opposite directions. Air for combustion is supplied to the ash-pit from ducts 23 and through the side members 5. In a modification the supports 4 project through slots in the side frames carrying external runways and the operating rods are secured to the supports externally to the ashpit. The slots through which the supports pass are sealed by shields pressed against the slots by the air pressure in the ashpit or by springs. The side supports 7 may be made in sections, the end sections being applicable to all sizes of grate while the middle sections may be varied in length to suit the size of the grate.
