Abstract

349,811. Mechanical stokers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A. - (Assignees of Miller, C. F.; 1319, Lincoln Avenue, Moore, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) June 26, 1930, No. 19450. Convention date, July 26, 1929. [Class 51 (i).] In mechanical stoking apparatus, preferably of the underfeed type, in which the grate comprises a series of endto-end sections over which the fuel is fed, a sliding movement is imparted to the first section, while some or all of the others are moved angularly about axes transverse to the direction of the feed. Fuel is fed along the underfeed trough 15 by a ram, and spreads over side grates 16 formed of sections 35 .. 38 pivoted together, and slidably supported at the ends on flanges 31 on the trough, and on beams 66, and intermediately on rocking-plates 68, 69. A combined oscillating and reciprocating motion is imparted to the sections by arms 70 mounted on a shaft 76, which is rocked bv a link 82 and lever arm 81 from a rock shaft 80 geared to the stoker ram. The arrangement of the plates 68, 69 in relation to the grate sections is such that the degree of oscillatory motion decreases in the direction of the fuel feed. Each grate section comprises a rectangular frame 39, Fig. 4, with side extensions 53 adapted to embrace a tongue portion 55 on the adjacent section. The pivot pins fit tightly in the extensions 53 and loosely in the tongue portions. The grate bars 42 carried by the frames are notched at the ends to interlock with ribs 43, and these ribs are notched at 46 to allow the bars to be inserted one at a time into the frame and then slid into position. The last bar to be inserted is locked to the adjacent bars by a pin 47. The air passages between the bars decrease in area in the direction of the fuel feed. The operating mechanism for the stoker ram is substantially identical with that described in Specification 287,748, [Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of]. Air supply, regulating.-The space below each half of the grate is divided by a wall, consisting of the rocking plate 69 and a pivoted flap 91, into two sections, so that air under different pressures may be supplied to different parts of the grate.
