Abstract
272,578. Dutton, T. M. March 9, 1926. Screw propellers.-In airscrews of the type wherein the blades form tension members between the boss and an outer rim, the, blades are fixed at one end and are rotatable at the other for varying the pitch. Tangential lugs 5 on the boss 3 receive the ends 8 of aerofoil-sectioned blades 6 the outer ends of which are fixed in an outer rim 20 where a spring washer is employed to allow for differences in the lengths of the blades when twisted. A square. 9 on the roots 8 receives a lever 10 which is coupled by a lever 11 to a pivoted lever 12, the end 13 of which rests in a grooved flange of the disc 14 which can be slid on the boss by a lever system 17 whereby the blades are twisted to the desired pitch. For fine adjustments, the lever is moved bv the screw gear 18. When a rotary engine is associated with the propeller, the disc 14 is displaced by a number of rods passing between the cylinders. A second set of blades 19 axially displaced with reference to the blades 6 is employed.
