Abstract

Jib-cranes.-To ensure horizontal travel of the load in luffing the load rope p is passed directly from the jib-head to a guide-sheave i<1> on the end of luffing arm i connected with the jib head, and the sheave i<1> is constrained to move along a line i<1>, r determined so that each of the distances KL, KM, KN &c. bears the same proportion to the corresponding height FF<1>, GG<1>, HH<1> &c. by which the head-sheave rises in luffing from the mid-position C. In the arrangement shown, the distances KL &c. are each one-third of the heights FF<1> &c. and the load-rope is reeved round sheaves at i', i<2>, i<1> before passing to the hoisting drum r, the axes of the sheaves and drum being collinear. The jib is balanced by a weight s suspended on a rope attached to the pin or cross-head of the sheaves i, or to a sheave mounted on the pin. The luffing links X, Y may be operated by screw- and-nut mechanism.
